Somatic Experiencing
Somatic Experiencing (SE) is an approach to treating trauma held in the body. SE focuses on reprocessing traumatic experiences by helping individuals discharge trapped energy and restore a sense of safety and resilience.
SE views trauma as resulting from overwhelming experiences that cause the nervous system to become dysregulated. These experiences could be a one-time event, such as an accident or assault, or prolonged stressors like abuse or neglect. Regardless of the cause, trauma disrupts the body’s natural ability to process and integrate the experience, leading to symptoms such as anxiety, hypervigilance, dissociation, and physical pain.
During SE sessions, we help patients tune into bodily sensations, emotions, and instinctual responses associated with the traumatic event. By gently guiding clients’ attention to these sensations, we facilitate the completion of the body’s natural survival responses, such as fight, flight, or freeze. This process allows trapped energy to discharge, restoring a sense of safety and empowerment.
We use a range of techniques to support the SE process, including grounding exercises, breathwork, and guided imagery. These techniques help clients regulate their nervous system, build resilience, and develop greater awareness of their bodily sensations and emotional states.
Overall, Somatic Experiencing therapy offers a holistic approach to trauma healing, integrating the mind, body, and spirit. By helping individuals release trapped energy and restore nervous system regulation, SE therapy empowers clients to reclaim their lives and move forward with greater resilience and well-being.
